St. Laurence Church’s oldest parts are late 12th century, but a church where it once stood has been around since the days of William the Conqueror. The majority of the Church is 14th century, with parts being added and renovated since then, such as the Choir stalls being added in 1900. The Church is named after St. Laurence, a 3rd century Christian martyr from Rome.
St. Laurence has served the people of Wicken for 1000 years. Some of these people have been famous, such as Henry Cromwell, Oliver Cromwell’s son. Henry, and his wife Elizabeth are buried in the Church. Their sons Richard and Oliver were baptised in the Church, as well as their grandsons Oliver and Benjamin. It has served many multi-generational families over the centuries, as well the people of Padney and Upware, also in the parish of Wicken.
St. Laurence’s roof on the West side is in urgent need of repair. A project group has been set up to raise the necessary funds to save the Church. If you are interested in helping, in whatever way that may be, please contact the Project Group Chair, Felix Hawes (felixhawes@sheepwalk.co.uk)
As of 31st May, we have had two meetings of the Project Group. We are currently in the process of deciding which fund to go for. The Historic Churches Renewal Fund has been made available from Historic England. This or the National Lottery appear to be our main choices. We have our quinquennial report later this year, which we have brought forward. This will highlight how much we need to raise, and how much of this we will need to raise ourselves.
